Guidelines to solve Seating Arrangements questions

Linear Arrangement – Example

Circular Arrangement -Example

### Introduction

The process of making a group of people to sit as per a prefixed manner is called Seating Arrangement. In these questions, you need to arrange objects/persons based on some given conditions, either in a row or in a circular order.

### General Guide Lines

1. Read the entire question quickly and understand the statements correctly

2. Determine the usefulness of each information and classify them accordingly into

a. Definite Information

b. Comparative information

c. Negative Information

3. Identify the statements that give definite information.

For instance let us take three statements and evaluate them

** Statement (a): A is to the left of B.**

The data in the statement is basic but not definite as the statement only says that A is to the left of B. but, it does not specify where A is located from B.

** Statement (b): A is second to the left of B.**

The data in the statement is definite as it clearly states that A is placed second to the left of B.

** Statement (c):T is between Q who plays football and P in order of seating in a row. **

It can be understood as ‘T is between Q and P. So, they may be seated as QTP or PTQ (so, the data is not definite) and ‘Q plays football’.

4. Search for the connecting information.

5. Figure out the seating arrangement by clearly identifying the directions

## The nice thing about doing a crossword puzzle is, you know there is a solution.

### Linear Arrangements

**If they are facing North,**

- B,C,D, E are right of A but only B is immediate right of A.
- D,C,B,A are left of E but only D is the immediate left of E.
- A is the immediate left of B while E is the immediate right of D.

**If they are facing South,**

- B,C,D, E are left of A but only B is immediate left of A.
- D,C,B,A are right of E but only D is the immediate right of E.
- A is the immediate right of B while E is the immediate left of D.

### Examples(Linear Arrangements)

**A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting in a row facing North. A is fourth to the right of E. H is fourth to the left of D. C and F, which are not at the ends, are neighbors of B and E, respectively. H is next to the left of A and A is the neighbor of B.**

**Which of the following statements is not true?**

**a) G is the neighbor of H and F b) B is next to the right of A c)E is at left end d)D is next to the right of B**

Answer: d)D is next to the right of B

Explanation :

Final arrangement will be like this

(Left) E – F – G – H – A – B – C – D (Right)

So statement d)is wrong.

### Example(Circular Arrangements)

**Eight friends A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting in a circle facing the centre. B is sitting between G and D. H is third to the left of B and second to the right of A. C is sitting between A and G and B and E are not sitting opposite to each other.**

a) C is third to the right of D

b) A is sitting between C and F

c) D and A are sitting opposite of each other

d) E is sitting between F and D

e) E and C are sitting opposite of each other

Answer : d) E is sitting between F and D

Solution :

All statements are correct except d). Because E is not sitting between F and D

Thus in this post we learned about the concepts of seating arrangements and tips to arrange based on given information with examples.
